Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 freed all slaves in the Confederate states, its enforcement was tied to the advance of the Union army through Confederate territory. June 19, 1865, is the date that the Union army arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, the westernmost Confederate territory, and announced that the 250,000 slaves in Texas were immediately freed. Slavery was then constitutionally abolished with the ratification of the 13th Amendment on December 6th, 1865.
The holiday has been celebrated since the 1860s and was first recognized as a holiday in the state of Texas in 1980. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill certifying Juneteenth as a national holiday, the first new national holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially recognized in 1986.
The National Museum of African American History & Culture has created a digital toolkit here with more information on the history of Juneteenth and ways to celebrate. Advocate Capital wishes all of its associates, clients, and partners a safe and happy Juneteenth.
